All computers connected to the University of Minnesota network are required to have current and active antivirus software running at all times.

A firewall is an added layer between your computer and the internet. It allows you to determine what network traffic will flow to and from your computer. Windows has a built in firewall that OIT enables for computers that are a part of the network domain. If you have a need to control ports and data traffic for your computer.

Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
VPN's are software that allow you to remotely connect to a network in a secure manner and access network resources like network drives, servers, internet, etc...

Encryption
The majority of us work with private data at work and at home. Some examples of private data are Social Security numbers, and medical data. Over the past few years there have been many reports of laptops or external media that were stolen. In order to minimize our risk against theft and loss of data the University strongly recommends that you encrypt your hard drives and external drives.
