 | Sharing files by e-mailing links to Netfiles What is Netfile? NetFiles is an online file storage tool centrally managed by the Office of Information Technology that provides 5 GB of storage to all current students, staff, and faculty. NetFiles allows you to store and share files securely on a University server and has been approved for storing private and protected data.
Netfiles can be accessed using most web browsers at https://netfiles.umn.edu or by creating a WebDAV share on your computer. WebDAV configuration for both Macintosh and Windows platforms, as well as information about the Xythos Drive Desktop Client software for Windows, is available at http://www1.umn.edu/netfiles/upload/. Netfiles is a great tool for sharing large files securely with other people, both internal and external to the University community, and allows you to avoid e-mail messages that bounce back undelivered because the attachments are too large. Also, large files attached to messages in your Inbox or Sent mail can seriously degrade the performance of your e-mail client. What's Needed
Before you start, you will need to activate your NetFiles account - Go to http://www.umn.edu/myaccount.
- Log in with your Internet ID (x.500) and password
- Click on "NetFiles Account Options"
- Choose to activate your University of Minnesota NetFiles account
- Click the Submit button
- Close Window/Log Out
If you don't see an option to activate your NetFiles account, contact 1-Help at 612-301-4357 (on campus, dial 1-HELP). Procedure Uploading a file
Open a web browser (Internet Explorer or FireFox) and navigate to http://netfiles.umn.edu
Use your internet ID (x.500) and password to sign in. Your Netfiles home screen opens up. Select the Upload button from the toolbar across the top: (click to view larger image) Each file to be shared (you can also zip multiple files into one
package to send) must be selected for upload separately. As you select
files to upload, additional fields for selecting files to upload will
appear.
Browse to a file you want to upload and click Open. The path to the file gets populated in the box. Click OK when you have all the files listed that you need to upload. Once the upload is complete, you will be returned to your NetFiles home screen. Sharing a file
Check the box next to the file(s) you want to share and click E-mail.

Select the Ticket radio button, and then click Advanced Ticket
Options. Here you may set file permissions to read/write or
read only, set a time-limit for access to the file, and assign a password
to the file. We recommend giving the ticket a unique name
and setting a password for accessing the file. Note that if a password is set, the person
receiving the link to the file will also need the password to
access the file.

Once you have selected your settings, click Email. Your default e-mail
program will open up with the link displayed in the body of the message. Change the subject line and enter the
recipient's e-mail address.
Troubleshooting Tip If you are unable to access NetFiles, check the University of Minnesota Systems Status site before contacting 1-HELP or NetFiles support .
