Web design software
If you are not using a Content Management System (CMS) such as Urban Planet or UMContent, you will need to use Dreamweaver to create your site. CFANS provides some support for Dreamweaver users and can answer specific questions and assist you in getting it set up. Faculty and staff are eligible to get Dreamweaver at a discount through UTools. We do not provide support if you choose to use another program, such as FrontPage or ExpressionEngine.
Content management systems
Content Management Systems (CMS) allow you to edit your website from anywhere, using just your browser. CFANS currently uses Urban Planet. Over the next several years, CFANS will be migrating our sites to UMContent.
Course web site tools
Moodle is a software package for producing internet-based courses and web sites. It offers built-in options for discussion boards, gradebooks, and other course-management tools. Visit the University's Moodle page for more information about how to request a Moodle site.
Web guidelines and requirements
Both CFANS and the University of Minnesota have specific guidelines and requirements that all web sites must follow.
Web design and templates
CFANS offers web design services to departments and divisions within
the college. Other units (research labs, etc.) may receive some
assistance as well. Please submit a request to cfans.help@umn.edu if you would like web design assistance.
University Relations provides free website templates that can be used for any site at the University. Using them is strongly suggested, as they provide a consistent, identifiable look throughout the University's web presence. In addition, the templates have been designed to meet all of the University's web requirements. If you need additional web design help or have questions about using the templates, send an e-mail to cfans.help@umn.edu.
URLs
A URL is your web site's address.
Most CFANS web sites will have a URL like yourdepartment.cfans.umn.edu/faculty/yournamehere. The exact URL will vary depending on your department. If you want a specific CFANS URL (yourgroupname.cfans.umn.edu), please request it when you submit your helpdesk ticket requesting web hosting.
If you want a non-CFANS URL, you need to request approval from Marty Moen (mmoen@umn.edu). Examples of this would be www.ffa.umn.edu or florifacts.umn.edu. Please do this before you submit your helpdesk ticket for web hosting, and include your approved URL in the request.
