How to Audit a Windows Computer

Below are instructions for running the audit tool and sending the result back to your Information Technology Professional. If you have any questions about this procedure, please contact CFANS OIT at cfans.help@umn.edu.

How to run the Audit Tool

  1. Download the CFANS Audit Tool (667KB, exe) and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click on the CFANSWindowsAuditTool_2.exe to run the program.
  3. A small screen will launch indicating that the audit is in process; the process will complete itself within 30 seconds.
  4. Three new files will be added to your desktop. Two of the files with your computer name in its title and an extension of .adt & .scn. The third will be a log file, "Global.log". (e.g., ANSC200756089_BTSWXLBY3439.adt, ANSC200756089_BTSWXLBY3439.scn, Global.log).
  5. A reboot is not required.

How to send audit files to CFANS OIT

  1. If you have an e-mail program like Thunderbird or Outlook set up on your computer, proceed to step 2 otherwise proceed to the section “How to manually send audit file.”
  2. Attach the .adt, .scn & Global.log files created in step 4 above to this e-mail message.
  3. Add to the body of the e-mail message your contact information and the location of the computer that was audited.
  4. Send the message.

How to send an audit file manually

  1. Open your preferred e-mail program and compose a new message.
  2. In the Send To line, fill in cfans.help@umn.edu.
  3. In the Subject line, fill in CFANS Computer Audit.
  4. In the body, paste “I have run the CFANS Audit Tool as requested. I am attaching the requested file for your records.”
  5. Type in your contact information and the location of the computer that was audited.
  6. Attach the .adt, .scn & Global.log files file created in step 4 of “How to run the Audit Tool.”
  7. Send the message.

How to remove the audit tool

  1. Go to your desktop or the location you downloaded the CFANSWindowsAuditTool_2.exe.
  2. Delete the .adt, .scn & Global.log files that you attached and sent.
  3. Delete the CFANSWindowsAuditTool_2.exe file.
