Software Available

A wide variety of software is available to faculty, staff, and students in CFANS, either free of charge or at a reduced rate. The software links here are divided into several categories.

Software for students provides access to software purchased with CFANS student technology fees for students to download and use on their personal computers, including Matlab and Mathematica.

Student Computer Lab software includes both the baseline collection of software that CFANS OIT installs on all student lab computers and links to each of the specific student labs, where you can find a list of the specialized software unique to that lab.

Snow Leopard
A University site-licensed copy of the full operating system (not including iLife or iWork) is now available for installation on University-owned machines, but there are many possible issues with upgrading to consider. SPSS and Symantec AntiVirus, for example, are not compatible with this new operating system.

CFANS License for SPSS
Beginning in June 2009, SPSS is available both for University-owned computers and for computers owned by CFANS employees under the new CFANS SPSS college license.

Adobe free upgrades, price changes, and new ordering policy
The University of Minnesota's Office of Information Technology (OIT) maintenance contract with Adobe allows free upgrades of Acrobat Pro 8.1 and CS3 versions of Dreamweaver, Flash, and Photoshop through September 30, 2009. As of July 1, 2009, OIT has also implemented changes to the ordering process and pricing of Adobe software purchases for all University of Minnesota department-owned computers.

Software for University-owned computers points you to the Academic Distributed Computing Services software page, which lists all software, both free and discounted, available for University-owned computers.

CFANS standard software refers to the baseline collection of software that CFANS OIT installs on new University-owned computers as they are purchased.

Software for personal computers points you to the Academic Distributed Computing Services software page, which lists all software, both free and discounted, available for personally-owned computers. This includes VPN and Symantec Antivirus.
