Saving Your Files

Many CFANS lab computers run a program called Deep Freeze in the background; this software erases all changes made to the computer (this includes saved files) each time the computer is restarted. This process ensures that each user will have the same computing experience, and it protects the computer in the event that someone were to accidentally delete an essential program file or alter important programs. Of course, this means that if you save your work on the desktop or anywhere on the "C" drive, it will be erased as soon as the computer reboots.

All lab users are urged to save work directly to a USB flash drive, to upload it to Netfiles, or to burn it onto a DVD. Each student is allotted Netfiles storage space by the University. If you need help activating your Netfiles account or if you have questions about how to use Netfiles, please refer to http://www1.umn.edu/netfiles/.
