Desktops and laptop recommendations
CFANS OIT staff continually update and refine our hardware recommendations.
Desktops: the desktop standard should be sufficient for most uses and is customizable to accommodate individual situations. For a complete list of options, please send a message to cfans.help@umn.edu.
Laptops: CFANS OIT announces the new Dell E-Series. The series includes three choices: a regular-sized laptop, an extra-powerful (and heavier) laptop, and a tiny (and less powerful) ultra-portable.
If you plan to use your laptop as your primary computer, we recommend you purchase a port replicator for your desk to make it easier to use an external monitor, keyboard and other peripherals. Newly purchased laptops will be encrypted to protect personal and private data. Physical locks for office and travel are strongly recommended by CFANS OIT staff. The security lock we have available for purchase is a 4-dial combination lock that fits into the security port on a laptop. The security lock costs $40.00. If you would like to purchase a computer or a lock, contact cfans.help@umn.edu, and a member of the OIT staff will assist you.
Research computing
Research may demand a higher level of performance than is represented by standard desktop specifications. For help finding the appropriate hardware for your research needs, please send an e-mail message to cfans.help@umn.edu.
Macs
Macintosh computers should be purchased only when they are needed to run specialized software or for another business related reason. For Macintosh recommendations, send an e-mail request to cfans.help@umn.edu.
