CFANS Automated E-mail Lists: Faculty and Staff

What are the CFANS automated e-mail lists for faculty and staff?

Automated e-mail lists update themselves daily using the PeopleSoft system. There are four standard lists types: faculty, professional staff, civil service and bargaining unit staff, and the three groups together. List managers can add to and subtract from these list using a manual interface. The lists include all people in the College, whether paid or unpaid, and follow the naming scheme below.

The four standard lists created at the college level and also at the department or unit level are:

Thus, the Department of Agronomy lists are agro-all@lists.umn.edu, agro-faculty@lists.umn.edu, agro-staff@lists.umn.edu, and agro-profacad@lists.umn.edu.

Note that visitors and persons with adjunct faculty appointments are NOT included in the faculty list or the unit-all list at the department/unit level unless added manually. They do appear automatically in the cfans-all@lists.umn.edu list. If you need a list for adjunct faculty members in your department/unit, please see the section on University Lists for CFANS units.

These lists are semi-moderated, i.e., someone in CFANS-OIT needs to approve messages sent to the list by individuals who do not have posting rights before they go out, so there may be delays. See below for more information on who can post to the lists.

Who can post to the CFANS automated e-mail lists for faculty and staff?
All members of a given list can post to that list. For example, a BBE faculty member may post to the BBE faculty lists and all members of the apec-all list can send e-mail to apec-all@lists.umn.edu. Prior approval is needed for situations in which people want to post to a list that they do not belong to. In the event you need to post to a particular CFANS list and you are not a member of the list, first contact your department administrator. If your department administrator cannot help you, send an e-mail message to cfans.help@umn.edu to make the request. 

How are the CFANS automatic e-mail lists for faculty and staff maintained?
List management is the responsibility of the departments or units. Each department’s administrator has been authorized to update the system tables. Here is a listing of people who currently have access.

You may add additional authorized users for your unit by sending an e-mail message to cfans.help@umn.edu.  Since there are multiple names for some units, it would be helpful to know the main contact for a department/unit and this information will be included at a future date.
